Lightning Protection System Installations

Lightning rods by Lightning Protectors

Lightning rods are metal poles that are installed atop commercial buildings and area homes to protect them from lightning strikes.  If lightning strikes the building, it will be drawn to the rod, rather than the rooftop, where high voltage can travel throughout the building and destroy electronics or cause fires. Lightning protection systems must be strategically placed by knowledgeable contractors. Installing a lightning rod requires specialty training and skills. Since 2016, Lightning Protectors has specialized in the installation and repairs of lightning rods.

Why Install a Lightning Rod

Although it is a common belief that lightning rods serve to attract lightning, they actually function as the path of least resistance to redirect the electricity from a lightning strike directly into the ground and away from the building or other objects. Well-built and well-positioned lightning rods can handle a tremendous amount of electrical currents and carry them away from homes and other buildings. The purpose of a lightning rod is to receive the lightning and direct it deep underground on a low resistance path.

The Dangers of Lightning Strikes

Lightning strikes are frequent in the area, and whether a protection system is in place or not, buildings will be struck. Lightning Protectors can help you prepare, by installing a lightning protection system. Lightning strikes the tallest structures in the area, usually houses and trees. When it strikes a structure that is not a good conductor, that structure can sustain massive electrical and/or heat damage.

Lightning rods serve the important role of redirecting electric currents away from buildings and homes, preventing fires and electrical devices from getting "fried". Lightning Protectors has been in the business if keeping properties and their inhabitants safe from the damaging effects of lightning strikes. Well trained and highly knowledgeable, the lightning rod specialists at Lightning Protectors will devise and install a lightning protection system to suit your needs. Lightning Protection System Components

Residential properties and commercial buildings benefit from installing lightning protection systems in many ways. There are several important components that make up a lightning protection system that Lightning Protectors regularly installs.

1. Lightning Rods: The lightning rods are positioned at the highest point of the lightning protection system, and serve to take the strike. Lightning Protectors installs rods in locations that are most commonly hit with lightning strikes, such as the tallest points on a building.

2. Lightning Cables: Manufactured from copper or aluminum, the cables attach to the rods and direct lightning strikes into the ground.

3. Grounding Devices: Steel rods that transfer the electricity from the strike deep into the ground, and away from other structures.

4. Surge Protectors: Connected between the electrical conductors and the ground. Surge protectors direct the flow of electric currents from a lightning strike away from the connected devices and into the ground. They are used to minimize the rise in voltage when a power line has been struck.
